I worked with film-makers Ollie Smith and James Walker to create a typographic style for the music video Chasing Rainbows by the Hightown Pirates.
The filming was to be shot at the Wapping Wharf old steps in London, on the banks of the Thames. My role was to try and think of a style for some of the lyrics which would appear throughout the film.
I thought this would be a great opportunity to use the environment to create some of the lyrics, and then to use natural elements, such as the tides or the wind to film the words disintegrating back into the environment.
I started by doing some sketches of the words we were going to use in the natural materials that might be found near beaches and rivers like small stones, seaweed, driftwood and also writing into the sand using a stick.
After a day of testing on the beach at Uphill in Somerset we felt confident that some of the styles we had tried out could work, and that by throwing water over them, adding more sand or just filming them slowly recede using time-lapse photography we were able to show them disappearing back into nature.
It was an amazing experience to be part of the shoot, working with really talented film-makers I learnt so much about the process and how much hard work goes into it.
Video to be released soon!
